Following Her Dream

Tang Turned MBA in Finance into Doctorate

Wan-Wei Tang describes herself as a "finance person." That's what attracted her to Vanderbilt from her position as a Hong Kong securities trader.

In her selection process, she says, "I gave high priority to a school famous for curriculum design and job placement in the finance field. Owen has such a high reputation in those areas, and for preparing students who are well-trained for the real world."

Once she arrived, she appreciated even more the basis for that reputation. For starters, she was impressed by the collegial atmosphere. "Even before the first class," she says, "we had started to work as a group for orientation activities."

She was even more impressed by the finance faculty she describes as "world-renowned" and "amazing." At Owen, she says, "we learned from people, not just textbooks."

The faculty's commitment to research and education, says Wan-Wei, inspired her to pursue the dream of becoming a professor herself. After finishing her MBA, she stayed at Vanderbilt to pursue a PhD in finance.
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
