Spinning the Right Mix

Delaware DJ Found Balance with Health Care MBA

After six years of project management and systems analysis experience—most recently in the health care realm with Accenture in Austin, Texas—Trevor Hsu decided to pursue an MBA with a health care specialization.

Welcome Weekend at Owen reinforced the sense he had made the right choice. "I left with the dean of students' contact information, and quickly reached out to him about opportunities in the months before our start date," says the Delaware native. "I can't imagine attending a larger school where this level of interaction would be much more difficult."

Trevor compares the skills required for the MBA program to those he learned as a mixtape DJ. "You have to listen to two songs at the same time—one on the speakers and one through the headphones," he says. "If the tempos don't quite match, you use your finger to slow down or speed up a record. Owen is similar, in that there are opportunities to balance school, clubs and social activities. The ability to customize your own experience gives each of us the control to achieve a perfect mix."

Although his brother is a surgeon, Trevor only began to appreciate the complexities and challenges of the health care business during the program's unique immersion experience, which included watching a brain surgery. "More importantly, the experience confirmed my desire to make a mark in this industry."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
