Building His Own Future

Construction Manager Learned Business—and Own Strengths

Theo Scripps says that earning his Executive MBA at Vanderbilt is one of the most difficult things he's ever done—and that includes training camps with the national rowing team. "But it's also changed me in a way that's difficult to describe," he adds. "It's designed to challenge you and make you learn at a rate most of us have never attained."

Theo is responsible for design and construction of automotive plants and manufacturing facilities—and the multimillion-dollar investments of his company's customers. But he believed his architectural training had left him without a solid business background for his new responsibilities.

Along with gaining the knowledge that he believes will help him join his company's strategic leadership team, Theo says he has learned even more about himself. "By working with a cross-section of very talented individuals," he explains, "I have a much better understanding of my professional abilities and shortcomings. The bond between students and the synergy of working in groups are incredible and my expectations and self-confidence have increased as a result."

He's learned something else, too—that Vanderbilt's reputation is even stronger than he had believed. "When I tell people I'm going back to school, they smile and congratulate me," he says. "When I tell them I'm at Vanderbilt, they shake my hand."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
