Vanderbilt MS Finance 2011
Business Valuation Associate, Deloitte Financial Advisory Services
For Suja Thomas, who grew up in Muscat, Oman, getting a job was even more important than for most new college graduates. It meant she could stay in the U.S. and be financially independent.
But in the depressed job market of 2010, she found that she needed something more than her undergraduate degree from a prestigious institution to find permanent employment. She found the Vanderbilt MS Finance program an attractive option. “I could wait for the economy to improve and build my networking skills,” which, she says, would be especially important for an international student seeking to build a U.S. career. “I chose Owen based on the strength of its career services, its resources as a professional business school, and the helpfulness of the students."
And because MSF students at Owen study alongside MBA students, most of whom already have several years of work experience, networking opportunities abounded. “I reached out to MBA students in fields and careers I was interested in, and they were supremely helpful in sharing their experiences and offering advice,” Suja says. “My peer coach was constantly available for any kind of advice, and I had mock interviews with MBA students with finance and HOP concentrations.”
Suja credits the practice sessions with preparing her for an interview with Deloitte that led to a job offer. “Mission accomplished!” she says.
