Wu Led Owen Team to First Place in Operations

In Wuxi, China, Shuanghui Wu helped GE Healthcare bring new products to the marketplace. But she wanted to complement her analytical strengths as a quality engineer with more comprehensive business knowledge and improved "soft" skills in leadership and communication.

The opportunity to meet and spend time with Owen alumni in Shanghai, and students and professors who were part of the "Doing Business in China" class trip, helped convince Liz (as she's known to her colleagues in the U.S.) that Vanderbilt was a good fit. That feeling only got stronger during her first year. "It is very challenging," she says, "but you also build up your confidence as you learn every day. By the time you graduate, you are well equipped with the knowledge and skills that will benefit you throughout the lifetime of your career."

During her second year Liz, who specialized in Operations, led an Owen student team that took home first place in the 4th Annual Global Supply Chain Initiative case competition at Purdue University. "It was incredible how we worked well together as a team," she says. "We were able to reinforce each other's strengths, bring different perspectives to the issues, and most importantly, we had so much fun together!"
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
