Heading for the Street

Network Helped Navigate Way to Investment Management Career

As a native of Turkey who was relatively new to the U.S., Serdar Sikca felt it was especially important to be able to plug into a network who could help him navigate the route from business school to Wall Street, where he plans to pursue a career in investment management. That (along with Vanderbilt's internationally renowned faculty in finance and "great reputation among Wall Street recruiters") was a significant reason he chose Owen.

Here, he found the small class size and personal attention from faculty he was seeking. Even more, Serdar says, he found an attitude of eagerness among others in the community to offer assistance and advice. "Professors and students here are ready to roll up their sleeves and help you," he says. "And the alumni are extremely helpful, whether you're currently in school or you've been out for 10 years." Now, he's building a personal network that includes Owen students and alumni, and colleagues from his internship at Goldman Sachs in New York and Atlanta.

The supportiveness of the Owen network made the journey much easier. "As long as you're willing to put in the time and effort," Serdar says, "you can accomplish anything here."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
