MAcc helps Byrd’s career take off

At first, Sarah Byrd wanted to pursue a career in Finance. After graduating from Vanderbilt with a double major in Economics and Spanish Literature, plus a minor in Financial Economics, Sarah worked as a financial analyst for an investment bank in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Over the course of two years there, Sarah says she realized that “I was most interested in accounting and the more technical aspects of finance.” The Vanderbilt MAcc program was a natural choice.

“Several of my friends enrolled in the program the year after we graduated from college,” says the Richmond native. “They always talked about the close friends they made through the program, how much they had learned in just one year, and how easy it had been to find a job in their respective cities.”

“Since I had not majored in accounting as an undergraduate, Owen was one of the few graduate schools where I could obtain my Master of Accountancy and take the CPA exam within one year.”

And it didn’t hurt that, as a lover of country music, Sarah would get to come back to Nashville, where she regularly attended country concerts during her MAcc year.

The program helped her reach her goal. After earning her degree and passing the CPA exam, Sarah accepted a position in the Denver office of KPMG. There, she’s using her free time to take on another new challenge — learning to ski.
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
