Learning a New Language

Dr. Swan Masters the Business of Health Care

Like many physicians, Dr. Michael Swan sought an MBA to gain a deeper understanding of business. That knowledge, he recognized, would help him take full advantage of leadership opportunities he had received as the Physician Executive overseeing women's health services for a Nashville-area health system, Saint Thomas Health Services.

But he found that the rewards were even greater than he had expected. "I came in, as most physicians do, hoping to better understand the language of business, finance and accounting," he explains. "I was pleasantly surprised that there were other skills I came away with that were even more applicable. I have a better understanding of organizational behavior, operations and marketing and have utilized all of these in my work–from how we protect our brand equity to understanding the economic drivers in the Saint Thomas Research Institute."

Fortunately, medical school and residency had prepared him for the rigorous work waiting for him at Owen. "The Vanderbilt Executive MBA program will challenge you and push you to your limits," he says.
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
