Sampling Her Career

Accelerator Helped Savage Find the Right Fit

As an undergraduate at Vanderbilt, Meg Savage majored in Human and Organization Development. Understanding the internal dynamics of companies, she believed, would serve her well in whatever business field she ultimately worked.

Seeking as much specific business experience as she could gain before graduation, Meg applied for Vanderbilt's Accelerator Summer Business Institute after her junior year. "I wanted to focus on learning about different industries," she explains, "so I could make an informed decision about what career I wanted to pursue."

But the Accelerator experience gave her much more even than she had expected–so much so that she returned the following summer as a coach. The immersion into real-world business projects fit her preferences. "I thrive in situations where I'm thrown into the deep end and need to figure out solutions," she says.

More important, that experience, combined with interview preparation she received in Accelerator, helped Meg land a consulting job with Deloitte upon graduation. "The Accelerator program really helped me stand out because I had relevant consulting experience to talk about," she says. "Most college students can't say they've worked closely with executives at a Fortune 500 company to help design a strategic campaign or solve a real business issue. Accelerator students can."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
