MAcc Helped Mary Make the Big Four

In her accounting role with MetLife in her native Tampa, where she was involved with regulatory reporting, Mary Hsu developed a keen interest in financial statements. And that, in turn, piqued her interest in furthering her education.

"I wanted to obtain my CPA license and began looking into master's programs," says Mary, an undergraduate finance major. "I also felt I was early enough in my career to reposition myself in the public accounting field." As she considered her options, she liked the focus of the MAcc program at Vanderbilt, which "offered me direct access to jobs in auditing at the Big Four firms."

Mary was also attracted by the personal attention offered to students by faculty and staff, the professionalism of her colleagues and the chance to "hone some of my soft skills." For example, she says, "I have learned to be a better team player and to be a more effective, polished communicator." Those skills, along with the in-depth knowledge of accounting she acquired, helped her land a position with PriceWaterhouseCoopers upon graduation. "Coming to Owen," Mary says, "has been one of the best choices I have ever made."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
