Julie Makes the Jump

Owen Helps Recruiter Find New Direction

After several years with an executive recruiting firm in New York City, Julie Vavrichek realized she wanted to pursue a different path. It was an ideal time, she reasoned, to earn an MBA.

She chose Vanderbilt in part for its strength in Human and Organizational Performance, which related to her previous experience, and in part because she wasn't sure what she wanted to pursue next. "Owen had such a strong academic program across disciplines," she says, "that regardless of what area I focused on, I would get an excellent education."

In her first year, Julie found her calling: private wealth management, which meshes her skill in building client relationships with her interest in the financial sector. Owen's modular format, which allowed her to take essential finance classes early on, gave her an edge in landing a summer internship with Goldman Sachs. So did participating in Owen's Leadership Development Program (in which she serves as a team coach).

But even before she found the right direction—a process aided by networking with Owen alumni—Julie knew she had found the right place. During her visit, she says, it was clear that "Owen had put a lot of energy and resources into getting the right students. For that much effort to be put forth so early in the recruiting process, I knew I would be treated the same way as a student."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
