Marsalis Acquired Skills for Army Acquisitions

Unlike many students, Jesse Marsalis didn't pursue an Executive MBA to seek a promotion and additional career responsibility but, rather, because of them.

A combat engineer for 18 years, Jesse was selected to become a member of the U.S. Army's Acquisition Corps, where he would be on the cutting edge of logistics and technology. "I knew I would need to expand my knowledge in finance and problem solving," he says, "while sharpening the leadership and management skills I have developed in the military."

As an active duty company commander, Jesse knew that a weekday MBA program was not an option. A distance MBA program wouldn't offer the personal attention from professors he saw as essential. Owen, he says, not only offered "world-class professors" but world-class classmates from whom he learned a great deal.

"I started this program with very limited knowledge of the business world," he says. "As an Owen graduate, I will be able to walk into any business environment, speak with confidence and provide valuable input."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
