Passport to Opportunity

Owen Took Jennifer Fang from Taipei to NYC

Jennifer Fang was a successful senior account executive for a global advertising firm in Taiwan. Three things stood between Jennifer and her goal of becoming a marketing manager with a large U.S. company: (1) She lacked cross—functional business knowledge and skills; (2) she needed to improve her business communication skills; and (3) no small obstacle—she lived half a world away.

Vanderbilt proved to be the passport to Jennifer's aspirations. The diverse course work equipped her well for success across all functional areas. A summer internship equipped her with practical experience. And thanks to the unique Owen Voices program, in which foreign and U.S. students partner informally to learn about each other's language and culture, she felt much more at home in America.

When she graduated in May 2007, Jennifer accepted a position with Citi Cards in New York City, where she immediately immersed herself in the work of the E-Business Customer Engagement Department. She was well on her way to her dream of "experiencing the real American life."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
