Health Care Makes Emily's List

Ex-Auditor Aims for Entrepreneurship

Emily Rash is the kind of person you might expect to sport an "I'd Rather Be Kayaking" bumper sticker on the back of her vehicle. But there is not enough room on most cars for stickers to cover all her outdoor interests. The former white-water raft guide also loves rock climbing, hiking, biking, skiing, rafting—"you name it," she says.

Now you can add an indoor venture—health care—to the list of Emily's interests. The former auditor for Ernst & Young, who had always dreamed of launching her own business someday, decided to pursue her MBA in 2008. "Owen was an easy fit for me because I was living in Nashville at the time," says the Middle Tennessee native. "It all made sense."

While specializing in general management and strategy, Emily became more involved in health care. She co-chaired a committee that organized and promoted the Health Care Business Alliance conference at Owen, and served as an MBA intern at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Meanwhile, she steadily expanded her network among Nashville's health care community. It all translates, says the would-be business starter, into "a tremendous opportunity for young health care entrepreneurs."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
