Leaving Her Comfort Zone

MAcc Propelled Onuzo to Another Level

Chichi Onuzo not only is a can-do kind of person; she's an "already done it." Few at her young age already have such a diversity of experiences.

Within the span of a decade, the native of Lagos, Nigeria, earned her undergraduate degree from Smith College in Massachusetts; managed conferences for a Washington think tank; earned her Master of Accountancy from Vanderbilt in Nashville; completed her internship in Hyderabad, India; and, upon graduation from Owen, accepted a position with Deloitte & Touche in Chicago.

In a way, Chichi's MAcc experience represents a vindication for one of her undergraduate professors, who told her that her accounting class—the only one offered at her college—would ultimately help her with whatever career she pursued. She discovered that not only was the professor right, but that a Master of Accountancy degree would propel her even more.

The education at Owen, where Chichi felt immediately at home, is "unparalleled," she says. "I learned to get out of my comfort zone and do unusual things, like an internship in India. I left with a sense of accomplishment. Owen has opened the doors for so many opportunities for me."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
