Diversity Prepares Engineer for New Career

Charu Solanki's career as a software engineer-with Infosys in India and British Telecom in the UK-gave her opportunities to work with clients around the world. Her experience with diverse business practices and cultures, she says, "made me realize that my professional interests lay in understanding how different organizational structures shape human behavior at work. I wanted to follow a career path that would combine my personal strengths and professional interests."

For her MBA, Charu sought a U.S. business school that offered a strong Human and Organizational Performance program and would allow her to "experience learning in a global environment." At the same time, because "I knew I would need to ask for help and guidance now and then," she says, "I did not want to be lost in a big MBA school."

Vanderbilt met all the criteria, especially as a place that functions as a close-knit, mutually supportive community. "Coming to the U.S. was a big cultural change for me, but the first two weeks of international orientation completely put me at ease," Charu says. "Every morning would bring fresh excitement to experience something new. We were given a taste of everything Nashville had to offer."

Now, with an HR internship with RJ Reynolds in North Carolina, Charu is well on her way to the new career she envisioned. "I am already a different person, more mature and more aware of myself and the world," she says. "It's hard to put into the words the value the Owen MBA is bringing me."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
