Community Connections

Owen Network Helped Parekh Land Internship with GE

From her first visit, Bella Parekh was attracted by the strong sense of community she felt at Owen. That, combined with the school's depth in human and organizational performance and the Leadership Development Program, convinced Bella to make the move to Nashville from her home in Atlanta, Georgia.

Right away, Bella appreciated how that sense of community extends to Owen alumni. After arriving on campus, Bella met Nancy Abbott (EMBA 1991). Bella was helping to launch the first-of-its-kind Human Capital Case Competition at Owen. Nancy represented GE, one of the competition's corporate sponsors, where she is Vice President of Human Resources.

Along with her academic skills, the connection helped land Bella an internship with GE, where she worked on organizational design and staffing in the company's Commercial Finance business.

"The students and faculty were extremely helpful in connecting me to people, and our alumni have been great mentors I could turn to for advice," Bella says. "That sense of family is how I knew Owen was the right place for me."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
