Dancing with the Deans

Close Community Maked Difference for Student Far from Home

When she came for her first interview, Astrid Huebner wasn't sure whether she wanted to spend two years in Nashville. Perhaps, she thought, she should attend one of the Northeastern schools where she had been accepted.

But after the first day of Welcome Weekend the following spring, Astrid was convinced that Owen was the best choice for her. "I met so many great students and faculty members that I instantly knew that these would be people I wanted to work with at Owen and beyond," says the German native.

"I did not see myself being part of a class of 1,000. Especially for an international student like me, it was invaluable to be part of such a really close community. When professors learned I wanted to do consulting, they'd say, ‘Oh, I know so-and-so you can talk to.' That's a big advantage."

In its own way, a farewell party at the Wildhorse Saloon after the Net Impact Conference validated Astrid's decision. "Dean (Jon) Lehman joined us for a line dancing session," she recalls, still laughing. "That captures the whole Owen feel. Where else would you see a dean dancing with the students?"
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
