Taking the Plunge

Health Care Immersions Propel Sartoris' Career

At Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), where he worked in internal consulting and physician practice management, Andrew Sartoris already had an entrée into his preferred field. But to advance a career in consulting, he believed he needed a stronger foundation in business principles and leadership skills that would “give me the opportunity to grow into any number of exciting roles.”

At Vanderbilt, he found what he was looking for barely one mile from HCA’s corporate headquarters. “I wanted to build on my previous health care experience and learn more about the industry,” he says. “Owen has the curriculum, the faculty, the affiliation with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, integration with the Nashville health care community, and a fantastic alumni network.”

Andrew’s Owen experience included immersion opportunities at VUMC, a policy immersion trip to Washington, a memorable Health Care Landscape class with Professor Larry Van Horn and Congressman Jim Cooper, a fact-finding trip to the UK with Nashville health care executives, and opportunities to learn from influential health care leaders.

He came away with what he sought: “a better understanding of the industry and the skills to go into consulting”—skills that landed him a job with Deloitte upon graduation. “After gaining real-world project experience,” he says, “I’m better prepared to take on any business challenges that come my way.”
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
