For Tellez, ‘Best Decision I Ever Made’

At Brown, Alex Tellez's undergraduate classes in option valuation and corporate finance sparked his interest in pursuing a master's degree. The California native looked for graduate schools that satisfied three criteria: a well-known faculty, cultural diversity and a location in a part of the country that was new to him.

Vanderbilt, on the "Third Coast" in Nashville, met all three considerations. But "what really made me choose Owen over other schools," Alex says, "was reading the unedited stories and experiences of students on OwenBloggers.com." Even though he hadn't been able to attend Welcome Weekend and meet students face-to-face, the famously student-run website gave him a real feeling for life at the school.

Coming here, he says, "is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I was surrounded by really driven and intelligent people. The opportunity to work together and learn from them was invaluable."

Alex, who became a frequent contributor to OwenBloggers.com, himself, landed on a fourth coast, in Honolulu. In less than a year after graduating from the Vanderbilt MS Finance program, he was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Product Manager at First Hawaiian Bank.
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
