West Finds Resources to ReDefine Career

Adam West was well on his way to a successful career in health care. As a marketing analyst for the Washington-based firm of Booz Allen Hamilton — his "first real job" after college — he went to the United Arab Emirates to develop the company's business in that region. But he concluded that he "needed a greater understanding of business fundamentals to supplement my health care experience and BA in English Literature."

He chose Owen for one overarching reason: "Owen made it clear that I would be the primary influence to my experience." To a self-starter like Adam, it was music to his years. "Owen," he says, "will provide you with everything you need to accomplish your goals, but you must be open to defining those goals for yourself."

His independent study in health care, in which he worked with a client focused on primary care, exemplifies both the approach and the relevance that Adam finds so valuable. Coincidentally, during that mod he was also enrolled in a class in health care technology. Through that class, he says, the professor "provided me with the analytical tools to understand the industry and build on that knowledge at a pace that allowed me to become a contributor in weekly meetings with a (client) team with decades of experience.

"If you come here with the right attitude, the resources of this school are beyond your capacity to exhaust."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many.
